Winter Adventure Race
Course Setter's Notes (Gear List below)
Friday, 25th January 2008
- The race course is set, most controls are out, and we're ready to go....
- You will not be required to carry any gear during the snowshoe race (including adventure runners), but must carry the gear as specified in the gear list below once you head out on the ski trails.
- On race day please obey ski trail directions! You will be sharing trails with the general public, so skiing in the wrong direction will cause problems. Plan your route accordingly.
- Please note that water has been added to the required gear list for adventure racers, as you may be away from the chalet for over 2 hours.
- This website may be down from 6:00am Saturday morning, as an upstream service provider is doing maintenance work then. So this is the last update to the website before the race. Anything else can be explained at the captain's meeting (at 9:30).
Tuesday, 22nd January 2008
- Race maps will be available from 8:30am on Saturday at the race start, for you to plan your route.
- The snowshoe to ski transition (in the adventure race) will be at the chalet, so you can leave equipment there. We'll keep an eye on it while you race, so no need to carry everything.
- Snow overnight means that Mansfield is now open to the public, and their website reflects that. Trails will be groomed on Wednesday apparently.
- Snow also means that snowshoes will now be required in the snowshoe section of the course (both races). So what was said on Sunday (below) does not apply.
Monday, 21st January 2008
- Captain's Meeting will be held at 9:30am on Saturday, to discuss course details.
Sunday, 20th January 2008
- The courses have now been mostly set, although some final adjustments may need to be made, depending on weather conditions over the next few days.
- The snow in the snowshoeing area is fairly shallow at the moment, so if there is insufficient snow accumulation before the race the wearing of snowshoes will become optional. So in both snowshoeing events you may need to decide if you'll be faster simply running.
- There is sufficient snow on the trails for skiing, and the trails will be groomed mid-week. Although the Mansfield Outdoor Center website currently claims the trails are closed, that does not apply to this race.
- Groomed trails will be suitable for both classic and skate skiing. More details will be given about this on race day.
Gear List *
The following list of equipment is required to be carried by each person (not by a team-mate), no matter what event you're in. This is basic safety equipment, so if we do a spot check and you don't have these items you will be disqualified:
- Whistle
- Compass
- Emergency or "space" blanket
- Toque, gloves
- Race maps (provided), and no other maps on the race course (you can use your own maps for route planning before the race).
In team events, the following must also be carried, either by one person or it can be distributed:
- One SI punch chip (provided)
- One first aid kit, including at a minimum: 1 roll gauze, 1 roll adhesive tape, 5 regular bandages, scissors, and 5 anti bacterial towelettes.
- 500ml water, or fluid of some form to drink.
* Some of this has been shamelessly borrowed from GHO's dontgetlost website, since they did such a good job of it. At least this means that regular racers will already have this equipment.
